The sober living program

A sober living program in Manhattan, built for the early stages of recovery.

Accountability and routine on day one. Community that carries you through. A team that has walked this road and supports you until you are living on your own in New York City.

How it works

Five phases, one team.

You move forward as your recovery grows. Your case manager and our house team adjust the plan with you along the way.

Phase 01

Arrival

You do not have to have it figured out yet. Whether you are coming from treatment, were referred by a therapist or case manager, or are here because a family member made the call, we meet you where you are. From day one, you have a team around you and a home that takes recovery seriously.

Phase 02

Structure

A program built around accountability and routine. Daily breathalyzers, money management support and a weekly house meeting create the structure early recovery requires. Our team does not manage from a distance. They are in it with you.

Phase 03

Community

Recovery is something we do together. The Wednesday Night Meeting. House activities. Wellness programming. Meals together. The relationships built inside Grassroot do not end when someone moves out. They become the network and friendships that hold this community together.

Phase 04

Independence

The goal was always a life of your own. As your recovery grows, the focus shifts to building a real life in New York City: career, relationships, routine. Our team supports that transition the whole way through.

Phase 05

Alumni

Grassroot does not end when you leave. Alumni come back for Wednesday Night Meetings, stay connected to the community and become part of the culture the next resident walks into. Nearly all of our residents who leave the house stay connected through the alumni program.

What is included

Six services, one monthly program.

  • Every resident

    Case management

Individualized support for residents and their families. Each person at Grassroot has a case manager who helps with every part of care, from appointments and clinicians to planning the next step.

  • One on one

    Sober coaching

Peer certified recovery specialists help residents work through early recovery challenges one on one and coordinate a care plan.

  • Scheduled

    Family communication

Consistent communication with parents and family is scheduled, to share updates and learn how to better help each resident along the way.

  • Weekly

    House activities & wellness

Plenty of chances to engage in activities, community and wellness, from the gym and the park to games, meals and outings around the city.

  • Daily

    Drug testing

Residents are breathalyzed daily and tested at random with 19-panel alcohol and drug urine analysis.

  • Weekly

    Money management

We support financial responsibility and lower risk with a simple, trackable weekly spend program.

Life in the house

What a week at Grassroot looks like

Every resident's schedule is built with their case manager around treatment, work or school. The rhythm below is what stays constant.

  • Every day: a breathalyzer check, your personal recovery commitments, household responsibilities and time in the neighborhood.
  • Every week: the house meeting, a one-on-one with your coach or case manager, your spend plan check-in and scheduled family updates.
  • Every Wednesday: the Grassroot Wednesday Night Meeting with residents, alumni and guests, then the backyard or a game.
  • At random: 19-panel drug and alcohol testing.
  • Ongoing: outpatient treatment, therapy, meetings, work, school and the slow, good work of building a life.

FAQ

About the program

Is Grassroot Recovery a rehab?

No. Grassroot is not a treatment provider. We are a non-clinical, peer-to-peer recovery residence and support program, run by people in recovery. Many residents attend outpatient treatment, therapy or psychiatry while they live with us, and our team coordinates with their clinicians.

What makes Grassroot a program and not just a sober house?

Every resident has a case manager, access to peer certified recovery coaches, scheduled family communication, daily breathalyzers, random 19-panel testing and a weekly spend plan. A house gives you a bed. The program gives you a team and a plan.

Do residents attend treatment while living at Grassroot?

Many residents continue with outpatient treatment, therapy or psychiatry while they live with us. Our case management team coordinates with those clinicians so everyone is working from the same plan.

Are there house meetings?

Yes. There is a weekly house meeting for residents, and the Grassroot Wednesday Night Meeting brings residents, alumni and guests together every week.

Can residents work or go to school?

Yes. Building a real life in New York City, including work, school and relationships, is the goal of the Independence phase, and our team supports it the whole way.

What happens after I move out?

You become part of our alumni community. Alumni come back for Wednesday Night Meetings and stay connected, and many continue with coaching as they settle into their own place.
