Clear rules. Fair rules. The same for everyone.
Rules are not there to punish anyone. They are what makes the house safe enough for everyone in it to do the work. Here is what we ask of every resident.
Core expectations
- Always
Stay sober
No alcohol or drugs, in the house or out of it. Prescribed medication is taken exactly as prescribed.
- Daily
Test honestly
A daily breathalyzer and random 19-panel urine tests. Testing protects the house and it protects you.
- Weekly
Show up
The weekly house meeting, your sessions with your coach and case manager, and your own treatment and recovery commitments.
- Weekly
Stick to the spend plan
A simple weekly spend program, tracked with our team, keeps money from becoming a risk.
- Nightly
Be home by curfew
12 am on weeknights and 1 am on weekends.
- Every day
Respect the house
The home, the neighbors and each other. We live on a quiet Upper East Side block and we intend to be good neighbors.
- Always
Be honest
Tell us when things get hard. A rough day said out loud is something we can work with. A secret is not.
Guests, phones, visits home and other house details are covered in the resident agreement and walked through on your first call, so you know exactly what to expect before you move in.
Is Grassroot Recovery a rehab?
No. Grassroot is not a treatment provider. We are a non-clinical, peer-to-peer recovery residence and support program, run by people in recovery. Many residents attend outpatient treatment, therapy or psychiatry while they live with us, and our team coordinates with their clinicians.
What is the curfew?
Curfew is 12 am (midnight) on weeknights and 1 am on weekends.
Can I bring my pet?
No. Pets, including dogs, are not allowed in the house.
Will I be drug tested?
Yes. Every resident is breathalyzed daily, and we run random 19-panel alcohol and drug urine analysis.
How does money work in the house?
Residents take part in a simple, trackable weekly spend program. It builds financial responsibility and lowers risk in early recovery.
Do I have to go to meetings?
There is a weekly house meeting, and the Wednesday Night Meeting is the center of the community. Your outside meetings, treatment and recovery work are part of the plan you build with your case manager.
What happens if someone uses?
Safety comes first, for that resident and for everyone in the house. We respond quickly, involve the resident's care team and family as agreed, and talk honestly about the right level of care. The specifics are covered in the resident agreement you review before move-in.
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
Tell us a little about where you or your person are right now. We will listen, answer every question about the house and the program, and help you decide on the right next step, even if it is not Grassroot.
