Recovery coaching from people who have done it.
One-on-one sober coaching in NYC that turns good intentions into daily structure. Our coaches are in long-term recovery, work alongside your clinicians, and stay with you as life gets fuller.

Structure, accountability and a real plan.
Therapy works on the why. Coaching works on Tuesday: the routine, the meeting, the hard phone call, the next right step.
- Daily life
Routine and structure
Building a schedule that holds: sleep, meetings, work or school, exercise and time with sober friends.
- Goals
A plan you own
Clear short-term goals and the next step toward the life you want, reviewed and adjusted as you grow.
- Accountability
Honest check-ins
Someone who notices when things slip and helps you get back on track early, without judgment.
- Community
Connection
Meetings, sober friendships and the Grassroot community, including the Wednesday Night Meeting.
- Family
Clear communication
Consistent updates for families, with the client's consent, so everyone knows how to help.
- Care team
Coordination with clinicians
We work alongside therapists, psychiatrists and outpatient programs, not instead of them.
More than an hour of therapy a week. Less than a move.
- Someone leaving treatment who wants support without the commitment of a house
- Residents moving out of sober living who want to keep their structure
- Someone earlier in their relationship with substances who needs accountability now
- A family that does not know what to do next and needs an experienced guide
- Professionals and families who want real support, handled with discretion
Not sure whether coaching or a house is the right fit? The readiness quiz takes two minutes.

Helping people find a life in recovery that is genuinely their own.
Max grew up in New York City, found recovery in Colorado and came home to build a career helping others through the same challenges he faced. He brings empathy, authenticity and a firsthand understanding of the process to every person he coaches.
Three steps, then we stay with you.
- Step 01
An easy first conversation
We get to know you or your loved one, your concerns and what support would help most.
- Step 02
A tailor-made plan
A practical plan with structure, accountability and direction for everyone involved.
- Step 03
Connected every step
Regular check-ins and a plan that adjusts as things change, so no one is doing this alone.
Recovery coaching questions
What does a recovery coach do?
A recovery coach helps you build and keep the daily structure that early recovery needs: routines, goals, accountability, meetings, work or school, and honest check-ins when things get hard. Coaches do not provide therapy or medical care. At Grassroot, coaching is peer-led by people in long-term recovery who coordinate with your clinicians.
Do I have to live in the house to get coaching?
No. Residents get coaching as part of the program, and anyone can work with our coaches from home through our care management and coaching service.
Is a recovery coach the same as a sober companion?
Not quite. A sober companion usually stays with someone around the clock for a short, high-risk period. A recovery coach meets with you regularly over weeks or months to build structure and independence.
Who leads coaching at Grassroot?
Max Arcara, our Director of Recovery Coaching. Max found recovery in Colorado and has built his career helping others find a life in recovery that feels honest and their own.
How do we get started?
Call or text 914-708-7476 or send a message. We start with an easy conversation to understand what is going on, then build a plan together.
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
Tell us a little about where you or your person are right now. We will listen, answer every question about the house and the program, and help you decide on the right next step, even if it is not Grassroot.
